So you want to be a voice over?
Every week we receive emails from budding radio enthusiasts asking how they go about becoming a voice over.
Whilst we don't claim to know EVERYTHING we can provide some tips to help get you started.
A lot of people today are under the illusion that the professional voice over must have an advanced home recording studio with ISDN and costly acoustic treatment.
This can be the case if you're looking to become a professional voice over but what about if you're just starting up?
Talent
So you think you have a good voice for voice overs, your friend has said you have a great voice but who/how is he/she to know.
First you need to find your style. Are you able to do accents, impressions and more or are you going to be using your normal voice?
Once you're feeling confident why not ask people around you what they think of your voice, make sure you ask for honest opinions!
So by now you should know if your friends are lying or maybe you have the talent. Practice, pratice and practice. In the car, washing the dishes or just when ever you can.
Equipment
Usually you will be looking at purchasing a studio condenser microphone which will cost you £150 minimum for a half decent microphone, then a portable vocal booth which is usually £150+, a microphone preamp to power the 48+ feed which the studio microphone requires, then headphones and sometimes a digital interface for a noiseless microphone signal. Then a computer would help and you could use a software like audacity or adobe audition... there's many to choose from.
So set aside about £500-£700 if you have a PC already and you're just about there!
Wrong!
We can provide you with an award winning professional USB condenser microphone, pop shield, portable vocal booth, microphone stand and professional headphones for just £249.99.
This pack includes the complete plug and play setup, simply plug the USB microphone in to your computer and you're just about ready to go. USB condensers are relatively new to the market and a lot of audio experts are mocking the quality of these genius inventions. By using a USB condenser you are saving, time, money, cables and the hassle of plugging in to a mixer then routing the signal to your PC.

Getting Work
First off you will need a demo. The simple solution is to make up some scripts which you might of heard on the radio or tv or even offer your voice free to local community, student and hospital stations and ask for the produced version when it's been produced.
Once you have a good demo there is lots of sites that can help to get you noticed but don't forget, you can always pick up the phone and push yourself out there. We are always looking for new talent to add to our pool of voices too!
Income
You may have heard about various voice over's who are earning £150 per hour etc etc... this is not going to be the case if you're new to the voice over world. Expect to start off working for minimum rates to get your voice noticed and if you're a big hit then when you're as famous as the well known artists, then you can start charging more.
